LIVING GOD OF A LIVING PEOPLE

The Sadducees had one big problem - they could not conceive of heaven beyond what they could see with their eyes!

Today's first reading from Maccabees is about the martyrdom of the seven brothers in the presence of their mother. We can read in the brave words of these young Jewish martyrs the hope that God will restore the just to life. This hope is expressed most fully by the second brother, who says, "You are depriving us of the present life, but the king of the world will raise us up to live again forever."

In Luke's Gospel the Sadducees had one big problem - they could not conceive of heaven beyond what they could see with their eyes! Aren't we at times like them? We don't recognize spiritual realities because we try to make heaven into an earthly image. The Sadducees came to Jesus with a test question. They did not believe in immortality, nor in the angels. Their religion was grounded in an earthly image of heaven. Jesus dealt with the fact of the resurrection of the dead; and showed the basis in the scriptures. In Exodus, when God manifests his presence to Moses in the burning bush, God tells him that he is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He shows that those who died in faith hundreds of years previously were still alive in Him. So Jesus defeats their arguments by showing that God is a living God of a living people...

Regarding those who have passed through death but are alive in God, Jesus Christ spoke the following. "Those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age no longer die; they are like angels." "God is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for him all are alive." Paul counsels us today: "May our Lord Jesus Christ encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.

Points to Pray and Ponder: May we direct our hearts to the love of God and to the endurance of Christ Jesus!
