Power and authority wedded with love and humility

POWER AND AUTHORITY WEDDED
WITH LOVE AND HUMILITY
We as disciples need to be dependent on Him and not on ourselves, just as the first who were called.
Deacon John Ruscheinsky

In the Gospel of Mark, we read in the verse prior to today that Jesus cured a few sick by laying hands on them. Jesus gave His apostles both power and authority to speak and to act in His name. Jesus sent the apostles to cast out evil spirits, and to speak the word of God - the good news of the Gospel. He did something unheard of when he spoke about power and authority. He wedded them with love and humility. The "world" and the "flesh" seek power for selfish gain. Jesus our Lord teaches us to use these for the good of those around us each day.

Jesus tells the Apostles to "travel light." "Poverty of Spirit" frees us from greed and preoccupation with possessions and makes ample room for God's provision. So this is the message for us today. We as disciples need to be dependent on Him and not on ourselves, just as the first who were called.

Points to Pray and Ponder. Let us join praising the Lavish Giver for God's bounty that gives us all the gifts of life. So the psalmist invites us. "It is yours to give grandeur and strength to all."
