THE TRUE TEMPLE IS FROM WITH-IN

If we think the end is near, all we have to do is wait. But if it is far off in the distance, then the task at hand is to live what we believe.

All things which we humans construct are temporary at best. We can think about large cities like Seattle or Los Angeles. We have witnessed in recent years a hurricane that damaged cities in the golf coast. When we see the storm’s great expanse, especially from the air, it is to be filled with awe.

Through Daniel, God wanted Nebuchadnezzar to know that His kingdom, so precious to him, would undergo destruction and desolation. Other kingdoms would take its place, but they too would last only for a time. The picture is a rather depressing one. What Jesus foretold about the destruction of temple in Jerusalem will be true of the modern temples constructed by human genius. And yet there is hope. Daniel prophesized that God Himself would set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed or delivered up to another people.

We sometimes think when bad things happen the end times are near, and yet we do not know the hour! Even the author of Luke’s Gospel tempered the belief that Jesus was coming back soon because he needed to help people get busy living their Christian lives. It made a lot of sense when you think about it. If we think the end is near, all we need to do is to be waiting. But if it is way off in the distance, then the task at hand is to live what we believe, to follow Jesus and incorporate into our lives the values of justice and compassion for which He stood.

In the Responsorial Psalm: We pray- Give glory and praise to Him. Bless the Lord; works, angels, heavens, waters, and so on. The true temple is from within you and me.

Points to Pray and Ponder: We need to be that close to God in our lives and on our journey together. What is most important to you?
