THROUGH THE INTERCESSION
Jesus gave His apostles both power and authority to speak and to act in His name
Deacon John Ruscheinsky

In Mark's Gospel we read that Jesus cured a few sick by laying hands on them. Laying hands and blessing is very important in helping people who are in need of healing, physically and most important spiritually. Jesus gave His apostles both power and authority to speak and to act in His name, and to go out, teach, do good works like healing the sick.

Today the Church honors St. Blase and he is known for the blessing if the throat. I would like to pray this blessing for you now.

"Through the intercession of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

These words of the special blessing of throats customarily are given on this day.

We know very little about St. Blasé other than that he was bishop of Sebaste, in Armenia, in the early years of the fourth century, during a time of persecution. Legend takes over from there, and tells the story of an anxious mother whose little boy had a fish bone lodged in his throat. The mother found the saint as he was being lead to his martyrdom and she pleaded for help for her son. St. Blase, moved to compassion prayed to the Lord and the child recovered. This is the origin of the peculiar devotion of the faithful to this saint when afflicted with diseases of the throat. Devotion to St. Blasé was very popular during the Middle Ages, and continues today.

We all want relief and protection from physical troubles and aliments of the throat - (hoarseness, choking, colds, and cancer). But there are also spiritual diseases as well that we need to pray to be healed by God's help and grace.

Points to Pray and Ponder. As you receive the prayer for this blessing of St Blasé today, ask through his intercession for deliverance from physical and spiritual illnesses of the throat and tongue.
