Understanding there is something more important

Jesus shows us how we need to take life seriously in its details so we can become the person God wants us to be.

Understanding There Is

Deacon John Ruscheinsky

In today's first reading David mourns the death of Saul. Now Saul had tried to kill David. David understood that there was something in life bigger than his own concerns or problems. And so when the king had fallen, David mourned the king's death. Jesus taught the people to love their enemies, too. Maybe that's why in the Gospel we read that his relatives thought he was crazy.
Jesus is the Son of God, The Word Made Flesh, yet we can end up treating Him only as divine, only as the Son of God. We think and speak of Him as someone really not familiar with the trials of human life. But by Jesus living with us in human life He is to be the model for us. In this He shows us how we should live as humans in sorrows and joys. He shows us how we need to take life seriously in its details so we can become the person God wants us to be. The Gospel today tells us that Jesus' family at one time at least, thought He was crazy, maybe a religious fanatic. They came to Him while He was surrounded by a crowd, hoping to take Him away for His own good. Jesus felt the depths of incomprehension by those closest to him. He was misunderstood, thought to be "out of His mind." Jesus met opposition from his own kin!
Points to Pray and Ponder: The hardest opposition, however, may come from someone close to us, even our own kin. Jesus met opposition with grace and with determination to fulfill His Father's will. We can handle opposition through the grace of God, all we need to do is to follow Him always. We proclaimed this today in the Gospel Acclamation. Open our hearts, O Lord, to listen to the words of your Son.
