Deacon John Ruscheinsky

In today's Gospel Jesus gave his formula for the happiness and harmony. He declared that we must forget our own selfishness and ourselves. In complete unselfishness he gave his life on the cross and through that heroic act he won for us redemption.  Jesus said: "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny Himself, take up his cross, and follow Me for whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and that of the Gospel will save it."  What do we have to fear? Lately I have been hearing from many people and including myself talking about how bad things are and how are we going to get through these tough times. Well, we need to remind ourselves that we not alone. We do have help; we have God with us.  We need to hear the words of the Gospel and be fed by the Eucharist; and we need to surrender our life totally to God. How do we do all this? Well Jesus gave his promise that the Holy Spirit would come and this was fulfilled at Pentecost. At Baptism we received the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit and it is through grace that change began to take place in us. This grace we receive of unity and love only can come from God. We cannot change the whole world by ourselves, but we can make a difference in our own community and the people who are around us everyday. Most importantly be yourself and listen to what God wants of you and do not be afraid to take action and make a difference.

Points to Pray and Ponder: The efforts of men to build the Tower of Babel ended in a confusion of the languages of the whole world. The Spirit at Pentecost moved people of many languages to unite in a single voice of praise of God. What God wants from us is a spirit of harmony and mutual cooperation. That requires unselfishness, a willingness to take up our cross with Jesus whereby we surrender our own interests for the sake of others. That is the way to happiness. It is even the right way to begin heaven here on earth...  It is worth it all!

Let them discourse of the glory of your Kingdom and speak of your might.
