Worthiness and value

WORTHINESS AND VALUE

“You have been faithful over a little; I will now give you greater responsibility.” (Mt 25:21).

I read just recently about the life of Booker T. Washington. He was one of the greatest of African Americans. He was an outstanding educator, reformer, and writer. At the age of sixteen he walked almost 500 miles from his slave home to the Hampton Institute in Virginia. Because all the classes were full he was denied admission. He took a job at the school sweeping floors, making beds, and performing all sorts of humble tasks. He did those so well that he drew the favorable attention of the faculty who found room for him as a student. He worked his way through school until he himself became an outstanding teacher and later the founder of Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. He who once was a slave then became a leader of African Americans. He died in 1915.

This is what Jesus is talking about in today’s Gospel. “You have been faithful over a little; I will now give you greater responsibility.” In the First reading for this Sunday we hear that such worthiness is of a value of far beyond pearls. Booker T. Washington understood the importance of appropriate self-worth, and this enabled him to reach out his hands to others, especially the poor and the most - needy. Jesus is talking about the kingdom of heaven, spiritual things, but the truth He tells us this Sunday is so fundamental and basic that even the world accepts it, namely, do your best with what you have and greater opportunities will be given you.

Points to Pray and Ponder: Each of us as disciples of Christ is graced with his or her own unique power and capability to perform God’s will. St. Paul said to the Thessalonians: We are not in darkness. We are children of the light and of day. We need to always stay alert and sober. Do you live up to your capability?
